Twin car bombings kill 38 in Somalia’s Mogadishu

The death toll for Friday’s attack in the centre of Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, has risen to 38 – the AP has reported.

Twin car bombings and subsequent gunfire left many dead and 20 others wounded, medical workers told Al Jazeera.

Police on Friday responded to reports of sustained gunfire and a loud explosion near the president’s residence.

According to local sources, a second explosion took place beside an international hotel

The East Africa based armed-group, al-Shabaab, claimed responsibility for the attack.

On Thursday, a day before the attack, the Somali government had issued a “terror warning” in the capital
